Observation Scale of Expressive Language (OSEL) Project

The purpose of this project is to develop an instrument to assess spontaneous language production of children between 2 and 10 years of age who are suspected of having a language disorder and/or are on the autism spectrum. We would like to observe children’s spontaneous language production in structured as well as in unstructured and relatively “naturalistic” interactions.

The OSEL builds on the framework of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) which has also been developed by Dr. Catherine Lord and her research team. While the ADOS focuses on social and communicative behaviors in more general terms, the OSEL will concentrate specifically on language production, capturing language forms (grammatical aspects) as well as  language content and use.

This project is currently recruiting families with children who are 2 to 10 years old. Participation in this study requires approximately 2 ½ hours of your child’s time and approximately 2 ½ hours from one or both parents. Parents will receive a written report providing test scores and a summary of our findings. You will be compensated for completion of our assessments with a $ 50.00 gift certificate. This project is being funded by the National Institute on Deafness and Communication Disorders (NIDCD).
