Training for Future ADOS Trainers

Training Others At Your Site:

After you establish reliability, you can then teach research group members who are in the same physical location as you are. Collaborators must be physically at the same site. Thus, though the University of Michigan and Yale are collaborating, we are not in the same location. Even though the University of Chicago and Northwestern University are in the same city, they are not the same site. We recommend that, with colleagues at your site, you double-score administrations (that is, code an administration independently, then check your reliability with one another) until you have established 80% agreement among yourselves on three independently scored administrations of the ADOS. This can include the tapes we have given you. We request that you only train people who are in your immediate research group (who are at the same site as you are and whom you see on a daily basis). If you need to be able to train others outside your immediate group, you must first get reliable with us, and then complete the process for becoming an ADOS Trainer, described below.

Becoming an Independent ADOS Trainer:

If you need to be able to train others outside your immediate group, you must first establish reliability with our lab, then come to another training session and act as a trainer in training, and then complete one more set of reliability tapes. This procedure is relevant both for researchers and for clinicians who would like to lead clinical training workshops. Once you have completed this process, we will provide you, at cost, with training materials to train others.

Individuals interested in attending the ADOS Research Training as a trainer in training should do the following:

  1. Complete the ADOS Research Training application, checking the box for applying to be a trainer in training
  2. Indicate where you were previously trained on the ADOS and by whom in the space provided
  3. Provide the date you achieved reliability on Modules 1 & 2 and Modules 3 & 4 in the space provided

Trainers in training will help lead small groups in administering and scoring the ADOS during the training workshop. After the workshop, trainers in training must confirm their reliability with us on one more administration of the ADOS, again separately for Modules 1 / 2 and Modules 3 / 4.

If you would like an application to be a trainer in training, please click here or contact Kathryn Larson (larsonka@umich.edu) at UMACC. Please note that the application forms are the same for trainees and trainers in training.

Trainers in training will lead small groups in administering and scoring the ADI-R during the training workshop. After the workshop, trainers in training must confirm their reliability with us on one administration of the ADI-R, which UMACC provides to you on videotape.
