ADOS Training Information
Training Requirements:
The ADOS Training for Clinicians, designed for clinical use of the ADOS, is strongly recommended for those intending to use the instrument in clinical practice. If you are a clinician and do not need the ADOS for research purposes, it is possible for you to purchase a manual and a kit from Western Psychological Services (1-800-648-8857 or www.wpspublish.com) and use them in your clinical practice. However, if you have any plans to use the instruments in research, you must attend a 2-day ADOS Training for Clinicians and a follow up 2 1/2-day ADOS Research Training, and establish reliability with us or with another designated group. If you are a clinician, you are welcome, but not required, to come to the workshops. Decisions about your skill level are determined by your professional ethics standards. For those clinicians who do not attend the workshop but would like to order a kit, please see the “ Kits” section, below.
ADOS Training for Clinicians:
UMACC offers separate trainings on the ADOS for clinical purposes and for research purposes. The ADOS Training for Clinicians is offered yearly at the University of Michigan. This training workshop is intended for clinicians interested in an introduction to the ADOS and is a first step for researchers in the process for establishing reliability. It uses a mixture of large group lecture, demonstration, and scoring, as well as a live demonstration of the ADOS. Clinical ADOS training is also available through WPS in many locations. For their schedule of workshops, visit their website at www.wpspublish.com.
To participate in this training, you will need to have access to an ADOS kit. For information about obtaining a kit, see “ Kits” section, below.
ADOS Training for Researchers:
If you want to use the ADOS for research purposes, you must establish reliability on the measure. Reliability is established at the 80% level. The process involves first attending an ADOS Training for Clinicians and then attending an ADOS Research Training. This training is 2 ½ days long and involves more intensive instruction on the psychometrics of the instrument, working in small groups on administering and scoring the ADOS, and discussion and question/answer about specific administration and coding issues.
After the workshop, you will be provided with videotaped administrations of the ADOS and scored protocols to start the reliability process. You will also need to send us a tape of you administering the ADOS for us to score for reliability. Reliability is established separately for each set of Modules 1 & 2 and Modules 3 & 4. For more information on this reliability process, please link to Establishing Reliability on the ADOS.
UMACC offers ADOS Research Trainings twice a year at the University of Michigan. This training also is available in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and several European countries. Please see the list of names and contact information of Independent Trainers for more information.
When registration opens for the next ADI-R Research Training an application an will be posted above for downloading.
Kits:
If you attend one of the ADOS workshops, you will need to have access to an ADOS manual and kit before training. ADOS kits, manuals and protocols are available through Western Psychological Services at 1-800-648-8857 or at www.wpspublish.com. Educational discounts on ADOS materials are available for research use and use in training. Dr. Catherine Lord, along with the other authors of the ADOS and ADOS training materials, receives royalties when people purchase these materials. |
