Graduate Student Opportunities

Dr. Catherine Lord has faculty appointments in both clinical and developmental psychology and is often able to mentor a developmental or clinical graduate psychology student. Both the clinical and developmental psychology programs have admissions committees that initially screen, and narrow down the applicants on the basis of grades, letters, interests and test scores. Following this screening process, the committees, and the most relevant faculty, review them in detail. While Dr. Lord has input into the final selection for students she mentors, it is not completely her decision.

All accepted students are guaranteed 5 years of funding. Two years of funding are for teaching. We also have our own funding through our Autism Center, which in the past has enabled us to add a student to the total number allocated by the graduate school (which is typically only about 3 for each area). Other professors have also been able to use their funding to increase the number of students in the graduate program.

Dr. Lord and the UMACC staff are involved in a number of different active research projects, including refining diagnostic instruments and studying communication trajectories in the early years. Refer to the research summaries (link) and the psychology graduate school webpage (http://www.lsa.umich.edu/psych/flash.asp) for more information.
