ADI Training Information

Training Requirements:

If you are a clinician and do not need the ADI-R for research purposes, it will be possible for you to purchase a manual, protocols, and training videotapes from Western Psychological Services (1-800-648-8857 or www.wpspublish.com) and use them in your clinical practice.  It is strongly recommended that you purchase and view the ADI-R training videotapes before beginning to use the ADI-R for clinical purposes. However, if you have any plans to use the instruments in research, you must attend the ADI-R Research Training and establish reliability with us or with another designated group.  If you are a clinician, you are welcome, but not required, to come to the workshop.  Requirements of your profession determine if you should administer the instrument if you are using it for clinical purposes only.

ADI-R Research Training:

If you want to use the ADI-R for research purposes, you must establish reliability on the measure. That involves first attending an ADI-R Research Training. UMACC offers an ADI-R Research Training once a year at the University of Michigan. Other trainings are available in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and several European countries. Please see the list of names and contact information of ADI-R Independent Trainers for more information. This training is 2 ½ days long and involves more intensive instruction on the psychometrics of the instrument, working in small groups on administering and scoring the ADI-R, and discussion and question/answer about specific administration and coding issues.

After the workshop, you will be provided with a videotaped administration of an ADI-R and a scored protocol to start the reliability process. You also will need to send us a tape of you administering the ADI-R for us to score for reliability. For more information on this reliability process, please link to Establishing Reliability on the ADI-R.

When registration opens for the next ADI-R Research Training an application an will be posted above for downloading.

To participate in this training, you will need to have access to an ADI-R manual and protocol. For information about obtaining these materials, contact Western Psychological Services. Educational discounts on ADI-R materials are available for research use and use in training. Dr. Catherine Lord, along with the other authors of the ADI-R, receives royalties when people purchase ADI-R materials.

Funding Available for ADI-R Research Training:

The National Institute on Health (NIH) has provided funding to cover the tuition costs for a limited number of training participants who work on U.S. research projects on autistic spectrum disorders. If you woulld like to apply for funding, please indicate the research project you work on and that you would like to be considered for funding in the spaces provided on the ADI-R Research Training application.
